Tommy Smith attended Louisiana College from 1953-1957. During that time, Smith played tackle for the football team. After his graduation, Smith, who received two graduate degrees from Northwestern State, began to make his mark in public education. His first big achievement was when his track team at Bolton High School won a state championship.
After his stint at Bolton, Smith began his career in education administration, becoming the Assistant Principal and later the Principal at Brame Junior High School. Smith then moved to the Rapides Parish School Board where he became the Director of Secondary Education (DSE) and Assistant Superintendant. During his time as the DSE, he implemented two nationally recognized alternative education programs. Smith finished his career in public education by becoming the Director of Education and Principal at the Louisiana Youth Academy Boot Camp.
Other major accomplishments for Smith were being named the District II AAA Track Coach of the Year, establishing the Tommy G. Smith Outstanding Achievement Scholarship and the Tommy Smith Merit Scholarship, having several articles published in educational journals, and authoring many grants.
Smith is married to the former Katie Sowell and they reside in Woodworth, La.
