The most successful team in Louisiana College men’s basketball history, the 1978-1979 Wildcats remain one of the most exciting and beloved teams in the storied history of Louisiana College basketball. Finishing with a school record 22 wins and a 22-6 overall record, the 1978-1979 Wildcats became the first team in program history to play in the NAIA National Tournament held in Kansas City, all the while bringing the entire campus, student body, and local community together in support of the historic squad. The Cats had a powerful combination of team talent, cooperation, hard work and experienced leadership which came together in a record breaking season. The Wildcats beat several state schools during this campaign including a big Homecoming win over Northwestern State University in February 1979. The Wildcats were led by legendary head coach Billy Allgood and assistant coach Gene Rushing. The team was comprised of the following players: Bert Bejsovec (#32), Joey Bollinger (#11), Roland Buller (#40), Les Chappell (#54), Steve Cook (#20), Ken Daenen (#14)*, David Dutt (#34), Randy Foltin (#21), Hook Harmon (#22), Willie Hey (#44), Ed Pierce (#12), Paul Poe (#50), Ronnie Proctor (#42), Kenneth Simms (#10), Michael Talbert (#52), and manager Garland Forman.
As cited herein, the 1978-1979 Louisiana College Wildcat Basketball team’s achievements and honors were numerous. For these reasons Louisiana College proudly inducts the 1978-1979 Men’s Basketball Team into the Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame for 2015-2016.
