Throughout the history of Louisiana College football, there have been several outstanding running backs. Perhaps the most talented and fierce competitor to his the field as a running back was bruising fullback David Corley. When the 215-pound Corley stepped onto the playing field, he made his presence known by running over anyone who tried to stop him.
Corley came to LC after an all-star career and state championship at Pineville High School. Although he played fullback, Corley had the speed and moves to be a halfback. The 1964 Press Book describes Corley: "Good power, breaks fast, and uses his speed well." His stats prove that Corley did indeed use his speed and power well.
His junior year he was the leading rusher and scorer for the team rushing for 536 yards on 101 carries for an average of 5.3 yards per carry. He tallied 30 points for the season and was named to the Little All-American team.
In addition to running the ball, Corley was also equally successful on the special teams handling PAT, FG, and kick-off duties. He is credited for several successful extra points as well as a number of game-winning field goals.
Corley was selected a team captain for the 1964 season. He rushed for 382 yards his senior year bringing his career total to 1,651 yards in 371 carries over four years for a 4.4 average. With these outstanding numbers, David Corley one of the leading rushers in Louisiana College football history.
