Carolyn Dossman Spears was born in Bunkie, La. and graduated from Bayou Chicot High School in 1959. During her prep basketball career at Bayou Chicot, Spears was an All-State selection in ’57’, ‘58, and ‘59. Spears averaged a staggering, 40.9 points per game during her senior year. She also helped Bayou Chicot to two volleyball state championships.

Upon her graduation from Bayou Chicot, Spears attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana-Lafayette), but transferred to Louisiana College to finish her degree. Spears graduated from LC in 1962 with a degree in Health and Physical Education.

Spears began her teaching/coaching career at Boyce High School in 1962. After obtaining her Masters Degree from Northwestern State University and Doctoral Degree from Louisiana State University, Spears began teaching at Delta State University, where she taught from 1970-1977.

In 1977, Spears returned to Louisiana College becoming the first head women’s basketball coach in school history. Spears had great success during her two-year stint as the head women’s basketball coach. In her second season, she led the Lady Cats to a 20-11 record and regional tournament berth. She also coached the school’s first female All-American, Shelia Thompson-Johnson.

Dr. Spears has taught in the LC Health and Physical Education Department since 1977. She is currently the coordinator of the Department of Health and Physical Education. She is married to Allen R. Spears and resides in St. Landry.
