Dr. James Alexander White, Jr., better known as "Doc" White, had a life-long association with Louisiana College. His father was one of Louisiana College's founders and a member of the Board of Trustees. Doc came to Louisiana College as a freshman in 1923 and received the bachelor of arts degree in 1927. He came back that same year to coach the freshman football team.

During his years at Louisiana College, Doc White lettered four years in football, baseball, and track. He also served as manager for the Wildcat basketball team for three years.

Doc was not only a great athlete, he was also a team leader. He was elected captain of the Wildcat football squad both his junior and senior seasons. At the center position, records reflect: White was a tower of strength in the line and was quick to size up the opponents play and meet it in the formation.

After graduation and coaching at LC, White went on to complete requirements for the M.D. degree at Tulane University in 1934. He soon returned to Alexandria to begin a 25-year career in medicine.

Through the years, White continued his support of Louisiana College in various ways. In 1945, he was elected to the Louisiana College Board of Trustees, and with the exception of one year, he served continuously until his death in 1961. He served as Board president in 1956 and in 1957. In 1964, the Board honored his memory by naming the beautiful parlor in Cottingham Hall, White Parlor.

As expressed in the 1961 Pineknot, "'Doc' White has forever dignified the trusteeship of this school not only with high capability and outstanding leadership, but he adorned his ability and goodness with charm and grace befitting a great Christian gentleman."

The Wildcat Athletic Association proudly inducted Dr. James A. "Doc" White, Jr. as a charter member of the Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame on February 22, 1992.
