Ronnie Thompson has been coaching football for almost forty years. Thompson played for the wildcats from 1965 through 1967 receiving the honor of being named defensive captain for 1965-66 and team captain in 1967. While at Louisiana College he received the all-time receiving completion record. After graduating from Louisiana College, Ronnie went on to a coaching position at Texas City High School. While working towards his M.Ed. At Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe (now ULM) Ronnie served as a graduate assistant coach for that college.
Ronnie served as coach at several high schools during the 70s and in 1976 went to Lamar University as Offensive Coordinator. In 1982 he moved to the University of Texas at Austin as backfield coach under Fred Akers. While there the University of Texas team achieved astounding records, playing in the Sun Bowl, (1982), the Cotton Bowl, (1983), the Freedom Bowl, (1984), and the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl, (1985). From Austin, Ronnie went to coach at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, under offensive coordinator, Lynn Amedee and head coach, Jackie Sherill. During this period, Texas A&M held a 9-2 record and played in the 1986 Cotton Bowl against Ohio State. Thompson is currently coaching at Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas.
During Thompspn's years of playing and coaching, he has always worked for the benefit and development of his students to help young people reach their potential and maintain their confidence level toward building the total person. He stresses academics and the appreciation of each student's God-given talents as primary goals in order to assure their future success.
Ronnie is married to Karen Hebert Thompson and they have one daughter, Jennifer Lyn. The Thompson family lives in Nederland, Texas.
