Jimmy Ratcliff's contributions to Louisiana College were monumental on and off the field. As a four-sport athlete, he was one of the best in LC history. The same can be said of Jimmy Ratcliff's life-long support of his alma mater.
A 1920 graduate, Ratcliff starred in football, basketball, and baseball for four years, and he also earned letters in track.
Records are sketchy from Ratcliff's playing days, but he's remembered as a wiry, gritty, elusive end on the football team. The possessor of "an indomitable fighting spirit," according to accounts of the day, Ratcliff excelled in making huge yardage when it seemed as if plays would be stopped for no gain. His spunk and leadership were rewarded by his being named Captain of the football team by teammates.
That same style was put to good use on the basketball court. Ratcliff was a key member on the Louisiana College team that captured the Louisiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship. The star guard was described as "swift, accurate in passing and shooting goals, and full of pep."
Ratcliff also was an all-star on the College's baseball team that took the LIAA championship. He struck out 18 men in a victory over the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He also was an outstanding third baseman.
Ratcliff was one of the most versatile athletes at Louisiana College and his courage was used as an example by coaches at LC many years after his playing career was over.
His association with Louisiana College didn't end at graduation. As head of Ratcliff Construction Company, he was responsible for building several campus buildings at cost, and he forever supported the athletic program.
