Alfred “Bo” Herring was a four year letterman in football at Mansfield High School. He was named to both All District and All State teams his senior year. He was also a three year starter on the MHS basketball team.

While in the Navy from 1952 to 1955 and stationed at Pearl Harbor, Herring played three years for the Base Team and was named to the All-Service Team for the Pacific Area.

He enrolled at Louisiana College in 1955 and played First Team for four years. He held the record for the most consecutive games played in a College, 41. He was dubbed the “Iron Man” by the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, and in 1958 was nominated for the Central Louisiana Player of the Year. In 1958, the Wildcats and Herring played in the Rice Bowl.

After graduating from Louisiana College, Herring was a high school coach for 34 years and teacher for 35 years. During his Head Coaching career, he won 227 games and lost only 121. In 1985, he coached the LHSAA All Star Football Game.

Herring was the District Coach of the Year five times and was nominated for the National Coach of the Year in 1991 by the Louisiana High School Coaching Association. His teams won five district championships and tied for the championship four times.

Herring married Billye Faye Cook of Grand Cane, and they have two children, Susan Herring, and William Craig Herring. They have one granddaughter, Sarah Koeninger.

The Wildcat Athletic Association inducted Alfred “Bo” Herring into the Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame on October 15, 2004.
