Ed Schoening was said to have typified the Louisiana College student athlete during his tenure at LC. As a result of total dedication both mentally and physically, he earned the respect of the coaches and players.
As Captain of his high school basketball team at Bayless High School in St. Louis, Missouri, Schoening held the rebound record with 279 rebounds. He also averaged 15.8 points per game and was named All-District and All-County.
At LC, he was a four year letterman. During his freshman year, he scored 112 points, only a preview of his record-setting sophomore total of 503 points in a twenty game winning season. His junior year, he had an increase in scoring and an average of nine rebounds per game.
Voted Captain of the Team in 1971 and 1972, he was leading scorer and rebounder and was voted Most Valuable Player both years.
Schoening established a school scoring record in 1972 of 1,646 points. He is still one of the top scorers in LC history.
Named to the "Outstanding College Athletes of America" in 1970, he was voted to the All-Louisiana Basketball Team in 1971. He was in the Top Ten in scoring in the state in 1972 and was listed in the Louisiana Sports Encyclopedia in 1977.
Having worked for Exxon Chemical Company for eighteen years, Schoening still spends many hours on the basketball court, helping coach his son and others in YMCA basketball.
The Wildcat Athletic Association proudly inducted Ed Schoening into the Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame on February 17, 1995.
