Billy Brooks currently coaches the Louisiana College golf team and teaches in the Health and Physical Education Department, but basketball has long been his passion.
A native of Jonesville, Brooks played collegiate basketball at Northeast Louisiana University. He was the head boys basketball coach and principal of Block High School before coming to Louisiana College. At the time, he held a 326-143 record as a boys high school head coach and a 231-123 record as a girls high school head coach.
His career record at Louisiana College was 181-95 with a .656 winning percentage in 10 seasons. His teams won two regular season Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championships. He led three teams to the NAIA National Tournament, and five of his players received All-American honors.
He held a 140-36 (.795 winning percentage) conference record during his tenure, and he finished his last season with a final national ranking of 18th in the NAIA poll. Brooks ranks fourth in the state of Louisiana in winning percentages for coaches who have coached at least 10 years in women’s college basketball.
In the last few years, Brooks has helped start the Louisiana College golf program.
Brooks and his wife, Vicki, have two grown children – Eric and Jennifer – and three grandchildren – Caroline, Anna Grace and Bronson.
The Wildcat Athletic Association inducted Billy Brooks into the Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame on October 29, 2005.
