Inch for inch - without question - Angela Self Longoria is the best rebounder in Louisiana College women's basketball history.
Her ability to grab missed shots was uncanny. From 1976-1980, she snagged 1,271 rebounds for an 11.1 average per game. Both marks are school records that will be extremely difficult to top.
She holds the record for most rebounds in a season, 405, for a 13.1 average per game in 1978-1979. The year before, she grabbed 13.2 rebounds per game, which is a school record.
Her best single game rebounding total, 22 twice, stood for several years as a Lady Wildcat record.
These numbers alone are indeed quite impressive, but when you consider that this 5 foot 7 inch forward from DeRidder nightly gave away a half foot or more to the opponents, and that the game was played without a shot clock during Longoria's career, then her deeds become even more astounding.
Angela Self in her playing days, she was more than rebounder. She scored a career-high 32 points against Louisiana Tech in 1977, and she averaged double figures for her four years.
She also holds the school single-game record for free throws attempted (21) and made (16).
Longoria's determination to get rebounding position, court savvy, and constant hustle, was the stuff from which a rebounding instructional tape could have been made.
An all-starter and three time all-district performer at DeRidder High School, she was a vital member of three state championship teams. She also helped propel the Lady Wildcats to a 24-11 record and fourth place finish in the AIAW Division II National Championship Tournament in 1980.
