Women Start Home Stand with Rematches

With just five conference games remaining in the season the Louisiana College women's basketball team will look to improve their position in the ASC Tournamnet over the next week and a half. The Wildcats are sitting in the fourth spot out of the East, the final team in from the division, just 1.5 games behind LeTourneau, Thursday's opponent, for third place and 2.5 games back of UT Tyler, Saturday's opponent, for second place.  A good showing over the next five games could move the Wildcats to as high as the number two seed in the East, alternatively, if the Widlcats stuggle, they could miss the tournamnet all together. 

LeTourneau | 10-10 (7-5)  3rd ASC East

3067The Yellowjackets have alternated wins and losses over the last month of games, never winning or losing more than one game in a row at a time. LeTourneau has the top two offensive players in the ASC in Crystal Jones and LaTanya Drakes who average 21.6 and 17.2 points per game this season. Jones is a 39.0% field goal shooter while Drakes ranks second in the ASC shooting 42.9% from the floor. Jones is coming off a 33 point performance Saturday against the Wildcats in Longview, that helped earn her a sixth ASC East Player of the Week award this season. Depsite the massive performance from Jones in the game, LC still came away with a convicning 92-78 win over the Yellowjackets. LeTourneau is tied with Howard Payne for the fourth highest scoring offense at 69.9 points per game with the 12th ranked defense allowing 74.9 points to their opponents. just ahead of the Wildcats. As a team they are shooting 36.4% from the field, 25.6% from 3-point range, and 69.4% from the free throw line.

UT Tyler | 15-5 (8-4)  2nd ASC East

2519The Patriots have been on a tear the last month of the season, winning four games in a row and seven of their last eight contests, all in January. They currently sit at 15-5 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The only loss in the month of January coming to East leaders UT Dallas on January 12.  The Patriots are led by their All-American senior guard Michelle Obach who is averaging 14.9 points per game, sixth best in the conference, and D'Onna Matthews at 10.9 points per game. They are the conferences best offensive team, averaging 77.3 points per game and the fourth best defensive allowing just 65.7 to their opponents. They also have the conferences best shooting percentage at 43.6% from the field and the second best percentage from 3-point range.

Louisiana College | 6-11 (5-6)  4th ASC East

5201The LC women are coming off their best offensive performance of the season Saturday in the win over LeTourneau.  The 92 points scored was the most in a game this year for the Wildcats. The win over LeTourneau put the Wildcats one game behind the Yellowjackets in the loss column and 1.5 games back overall with five conferecne games left.  The Wildcat still sit in the final spot out of the East facing all three teams ahead of them over the next four games. The LC offense has been climbing the ranks steadily over the last few weeks and now rank third in the conference in scoring, putting in 70.4 points per game, but allowing a conference worst 76.6 points to their opponents.  Brooke Jones contines to be the Wildcats biggest offensive presence under the basket with a 12.0 point per game average and 6.6 rebound per game average, both tops on the team.  Karlee Teddlie is the only other Wildcat putting in more than 10 points per game at 10.1 per game. Kourtney McGhee leads the team in assist, averaging 2.4 per game.

The Wildcats begin a five-game homestand Thursday against LeTourneau, that also begins a stretch of five games in 10 days. The WIldcats are 2.5 games out of 2nd place in the East and only 1.5 games ahead of Ozarks for the final spot in the tournament out of the East. Tip off for the game Thursday is scheduled for 5:30 pm and on Saturday at 1pm. During halftime of the game students will have the chance to win a prize by playing Louisiana College professor and Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Scott Pickard in a game of 1-on-1.
