Trinity Too Much For Wildcats

Box Score

The Louisiana College women's basketball team played their final game of the 2017 portion of their schedule on Monday night against Trinty University (TX). The Wildcats had a tough night shooting, going 28.4% from the floor in the 75-62 loss in San Antonio, Texas. LC has the rest of December to celebrate Christmas and prepare for four American Southwest Conference road games to start January.

Trinity came out strong in the first quarter of the game making their first two attempts from the floor. A layup by Jonika Walton put the Wildcats on top early 6-4, but that would be the final time that LC would hold the lead in the game. The Tigers went on a 15-0 run over the next four minutes of play to give themselves a comfortable 19-6 lead. They would go on to out pace the Wildcats the rest of he opening quarter 21-4 to take at 15-point lead into the second quarter.

Down by 20 early in the second quarter, the Wildcats made produced one of their best stretches of play in the game, erasing the deficit with an 11-0 run to take the margin down to single digits at 33-24. The Tigers finally broke the scoreless stretch with a three-ball to push the lead back to 12. The Wildcats outscored Trinity in the second quarter but by only one point, not enough to cut down the large lead the Tigers held.

The Wildcats shot 37.0% in the first half, compared to a 40.0% clip by the Tigers and out-rebounded Trinity 22-18, but the difference came in the turnover margin. LC committed 20 turnovers in the first half compared to just 10 from Trinity. Unfortunately for the Wildcats the shooting woes struck them hard in the second half and the turnover bug continued to bite.

A 9-for-40 effort in the second half and 16 more turnovers kept the Wildcats from making any headway back into the game over the final 20 minutes. LC did finish the game strong, playing well over the final four minutes of the fourth quarter. A 15-4 stretch of play got the lead down to single digits once again, but it was too little too late for the Wildcats with just one minute remaining in the game.

Sophomore forward Zharian Maxmillion had her best game of the season scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds for her first double-doubule of the season. Kourtney McGhee also finished the game in double figures with 14 points and eight rebounds. Janae Smith and Brooke Jones each had eight points in the game.

The Wildcats will not play again until January 4 as they have a few days off for Christmas break before returning to work to prepare for the bulk of the ASC schedule. The Wildcats have a date with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to start play in 2018 before heading to Concordia University.
