Box Score Box ScoreUpdated Season StatsUpdated ASC StandingsAfter trailing by as much as 14 points in the first half and facing a double digit deficit at halftime, the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats showed off their veteran poise against Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon, taking a critical ASC matchup by a final score of 64-62 in the H.O. West Fieldhouse.
Trailing 38-27 at the half and struggling to find their offensive rhythm against the Cowgirls, the Lady Cats had to find a way to score without the benefit of the fast-paced style due to Hardin-Simmons being able to effectively milk the shot clock down to single digits nearly every possession.
But LC senior guard
Neka Jones, who had struggled in her previous few games from behind the three-point line, gave the Lady Cats the spark they needed to mount a furious second half comeback.
Jones' first three-pointer of the game came with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half, as she drilled a shot from the perimeter off an assist from
Kaci Willis to put LC with a bucket at 46-44, the closet they had been since early in the first half.
The Cowgirls would answer back immediately with a 6-1 run over the the next two minutes to stretch their lead back out to seven points at 52-45.
LC was able to keep pressure on HSU, however, and another three-pointer from Jones followed by a
Skylar Chenevert layup on a fastbreak tied the score at 52 a piece, the first time the Lady Cats held a share of the lead since their first possession of the game when
Danisha Allison nailed a jumper to tie the game at 2-2.
Jones would then give LC their first lead of the game at the 7:35 mark of the second half on her third three ball of the half, which put LC up 55-53.
After three ties over the next three minutes, LC would take over for good on a nice layup from
Keana Frank in the paint at the 4:23 mark to give the Lady Cats a 61-59 advantage.
The veteran Lady Wildcats would hold onto that lead the rest of the way, eventually squeezing out the hard fought 64-62 win.
Jones led LC with 15 points while Allison and Frank also reached double figures with 10 points each.
Despite a poor first half shooting from the field (24.1%), LC was able to bounce back and hit 11 of their 27 shot attempts (40.7%) in the final twenty minutes to carry them to the win.
LC (14-5 overall, 11-5 in ASC play) now sits alone in third place in the ASC standings behind Texas-Tyler (21-1, 16-1) and Texas-Dallas (17-4, 13-3).
The Lady Wildcats will host Howard Payne on Thursday at the H.O. West Fieldhouse with a chance to distance themselves from the Lady Jackets in the standings, as HPU sits just two games back in fourth place at 12-9 overall and 9-7 in conference play.Â
