Neka Jones score her 1,000
th career point, and nearly lead her team on an historic second half comeback, the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats dropped a heartbreaker to the University of the Ozarks 88-81 on Thursday night in Clarksville, Arkansas.
After playing six of their last seven games at home in the H.O. West Fieldhouse, the Lady Wildcats seemed to have trouble adjusting on the road in Clarksville, as they missed on their first 15 attempts from behind the three-point line in the first half and went just 1-for-20 from long range in the first 20 minutes.
The Lady Eagles would come out on fire, however, making 8 of their 13 three-point attempts in the first half to take a 49-27 lead into halftime.
A potential second half miracle comeback by the Lady Wildcats fell short despite an inspiring effort from LC in the final period, which included an unconscious 30-1 run over a six-plus minute period which began midway through the half.
When the Ozarks Madison Sherrer made a layup with 10:40 left in the half to put the Lady Eagles up 69-42, it appeared as though LC had no hope at securing yet another conference victory.
But the Lady Cats, led by a battle tested senior class, would not let up, going on a spectacular 30-1 run over the next six and a half minutes to pull themselves within six points at 76-70 on a
Skylar Chenevert layup with 4:14 remaining.
LC would keep firing, pulling within four at 83-79 on a
Kaci Willis jump shot with 1:32 remaining, the closet the Lady Cats had been since they trailed 8-4 less than four minutes into the game.
But that would be all LC could muster the rest of the way, as the first half deficit proved too much to overcome despite a valiant second half effort as the Lady Eagles claimed the 88-81 win over the Lady Cats.
The comeback was started due in large part to Jones catching fire from the field, as she scored 18 of her game-high 27 points in the final 20 minutes, including going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Jones also finished with nine rebounds while fellow senior
Kaci Willis had seven points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Cats.
Jordana Andrew led the Ozarks with 22 points on the night.
Louisiana College (16-6 overall, 13-6 in ASC play) was not affected in the standings by the loss, as they still remain behind ASC regular season champion Texas-Tyler and Texas-Dallas in the conference standings.
The Lady Wildcats will have an opportunity to avenge their early season loss to Texas-Tyler on Saturday, as they travel to Tyler, Tx. to take on the Lady Patriots in their final ASC matchup of the year beginning at 1:00 p.m.
