Box Score Box ScoreUpdated Season StatsUpdated ASC StandingsAlexandria, La. - After a disappointing loss to #18 Texas-Tyler on Thursday, the Louisiana College women's basketball team got back on track Saturday afternoon with an 81-78 win over the University of the Ozarks at "The Fort" on LSU-Alexandria's campus.
Â
The Lady Cats fought off a hot shooting Ozarks team, as the Lady Eagles drilled 10 of their 21 attempts from beyond the three-point arc to put pressure on a veteran LC squad all afternoon.
Â
The biggest difference for LC, however, was their ability to take care of the basketball, as they turned the ball over just eight times all game and dished out 17 assists. The Lady Cats were strong from the free throw, going 17-for-23 from the charity stripe on the day, including 15-for-19 down the stretch in the second half.
Â
The Lady Eagles controlled most of the first half, as they took a 37-30 lead into halftime after Ashley Hipps drained a three-pointer and jump shot on the Ozarks' final two possessions of the half to give her team the seven point advantage.
Â
The Lady Cats would come out strong in the second half, however, as they chipped into the lead early, taking a 44-43 advantage on a pair of
LaToya Evans free throws at the 14:46 mark.
Â
The two teams would go back-and-forth the entire second half, as they lead exchanged hands seven times in the final 20 minutes.
Â
But after LC senior
Kaci Willis hit a pair of free throws with less than two minutes remaining to give the Lady Cats a 74-73 lead, LC would not allow the Lady Eagles to taste the lead again, as they were able to finish out the win and close out their three-game homestand with key conference win.
Â
LC senior guards
Neka Jones (16 points, 6 rebounds) and
Karylon Thornton (16 points) tied for the team lead in scoring while fellow seniors
Kaci Willis (10 points, 9 rebounds) and
LaToya Evans (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring.
Â
The Ozarks' Brianna Moltz, who went 5-for-6 from three point territory, led all scorers with 21 points on the afternoon before fouling out late in the second half.
Â
The win moves LC to 9-4 overall (6-4 in ASC play), and with ETBU's 84-82 upset of Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Wildcats have moved into sole possession of 3
rd place in the ASC standings. Â
Â
LC will travel to Marshall, Texas on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup against ETBU with a chance to sweep the season series from the Lady Tigers.
