PINEVILLE, La. – It's become old hat for the Lady Cats, withstand a gallant first-half effort y the opponent before cruising to a win late. Such was the case Monday night when Louisiana College outscored Mississippi College 40-30 in the second half en route to a 71-56 American Southwest Conference win.
It was not a beautiful game for LC (15-1, 11-1 ASC), the Lady Cats shot just 21 percent from three-point range and committed 17 turnovers, but the Lady Cats shot 77 percent from the free-throw line, compared to 47.6 percent by Mississippi College (12-5, 7-5 ASC).
Junior point guard Roslyn Wilmer, who played her high school ball in Marksville, was the unquestioned star of the night for LC, scoring 23 of her career-high 27 points in the first half on, hitting 4-of-8 from three-point range and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe.
She added five rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal in the win.
Three other LC women managed to reach double figures on the night.
All-American Tillisha Givens (Monrore, La./Ouachita Parish HS) scored 15 points, hit 9-of-12 free throws and pulled down six rebounds while Kayla Guidry, a former Peabody Lady Warhorse, scored 10 points.
Junior Shasidy Ludgood, an native of Inglewood, Calif., was an unexpected hero for LC. Starting just her second game as a Lady Cats, Ludgood scored 11 points.
Mississippi College, which suffered its third consecutive defeat, got a major lift from low-post presence Jalessa Taylor, who put up a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double with two assists and two steals.
Jennifer Wair, the Lady Choctaws other low-post standout, had a double-double of her own with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with an a steal and two assists.
Thus ended a 4-0, four-game home stand for LC, which will now face back-to-back American Southwest Conference East Division games, Thursday at Texas-Tyler and Saturday at LeTourneau.
LC returns home next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for an ASC East showdown with Texas-Tyler, LC's annual “Fill the Field House” game.
