PINEVILLE, La. – Louisiana College grabbed twenty rebounds at each end of the floor en route to a 78-62 victory over the University of the Ozarks Lady Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Wildcats' interior play and dominance on the boards helped them shake off a sluggish start and topple the Lady Eagles.
Freshman center Voneshia Williams led the way with 25 points and 14 rebounds as the Lady Wildcats pulled away to a double-digit lead with five minutes to go in the game. Twelve of Williams's boards were on the offensive glass, and many led to put-back lay-ups as she tallied 15 points off of rebounds.
Christy Pantallion went 8-11 from the floor in the second half as she contributed a 23 point effort for the Layd Cats. Pantallion also grabbed four steals and dished out four assists and was key to a lockdown press that forced twenty-two turnovers from the visiting Eagles team.
The game was still not certain halfway through the second half as Ozark's Ashley Teague hit a three-pointer to cut the Lady Cats' lead to five.
The visitors would get as close as three points with just over eight minutes to play, but the Lady Eagles had no answer for the interior strength of Williams and the Lady Wildcats.
Tillisha Givens hit 10 foul shots and co-led LC with 14 rebounds of her own, including 10 on the defensive end of the ball. Roslyn Wilmer hit two three-pointers and added 10 points off the bench in the victory.
Turnovers and traveling violations plagued both teams in the first half, as the teams gave up the ball a combined 19 times. LC led by only five at the break after their slow start, but had great success pressing the ball in the second half.
Sabrina Goodard led the way for Ozarks with 17 points on 7-11 shooting, and April Young added 12 points in a losing effort.
Louisiana College improves to 17-2 on the season, with a 13-2 record in American Southwest Conference play. The Lady Cats will host East Texas Baptist University next Thursday night.
Ozarks sees their conference record drop to 3-12, and is now 5-15 overall.
