Cats Crush Cancer on Cox Sports

On Wednesday, April 3, Louisiana College baseball will play one of it's most important games of the season. While there will be more eyes on the Wildcats with Cox Sports in town for a live broadcast and in-state rival Centenary College in the other dugout, that isn't the reason for the magnitude of the game.

Each year Louisiana College baseball and Head Coach Mike Byrnes host a "Cats Crush Cancer" game as a part of their on-going effort to raise money for cancer research in Central Louisiana. Wednesday's affair with Centenary has been chosen as that game. The Wildcats will wear special pink jerseys, run around on pink bases, and pass the helmet in the stands for fans to offer their own donations. All proceeds from tickets sales will also be donated.

The initiative began a few years ago when Colynda Byrnes, wife of Coach Mike Byrnes, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then the Wildcats have hosted the annual game, contributed to cancer research with their time and money donations, and involved the Wildcat fan base via on-field performance. Each year fans contribute to the cause a dollar amount for every Wildcat home run hit. This year the total is $205 per home run and through the first 23 games of the season the Wildcats have hit 15 balls out of the park for a total of $3,075 raised.

All money collected during the season via home run balls or during the Cats Crush Cancer game will be donated to the two cancer research and treatment centers in CenLA, Rapides Regional and Cabrini. Along with countless others, Mrs. Colynda received top-notch treatment at these centers and the Wildcat baseball team and their fans want to make sure that level of care continues.

"It's going to be a very emotional day, like it is every year," Byrnes said. "We're lucky that mom's in remission and she's fighting. Now it's our job to help others who are fighting like her and make sure that we do anything we can to support them."

Join the Wildcats for a special game as Cox Sports Television will be in the house for a live broadcast and give back to the community with you donations to cancer care in Louisiana.
