Wildcats Get 5-2 Win in Series Opener

4/27/2018 9:27:00 PM

Box Score

The Louisiana College softball team started their senior weekend and season ending series with Belhaven University on a high note, picking up a 5-2 win over the Blazers. Savannah Settle threw her 15th complete game of the season and the Wildcat offense manufactured enough run support to get the win. LC and Belhaven will finish their three game series with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon and Wildcat Park. Senior recognition for Lucy Lewis, Savannah Settle, and Mattie Stine will take place between the two games.

After a scoreless first inning where the Wildcats left the first run of the game at third base to end the inning, LC had the first three batters of the inning reach in the second. A fly ball to deep right center from Taylor Hammock went in and out of the glove of the defender, allowing a run to score and leaving the bases loaded. Peyton Eschette followed suit with a sacrifice fly to right and LC led 2-0. An safety squeeze play from Sami Walters at the plate and Kourtney LeBlanc at third brought in the third run and a sharp single from Shelby Bergeron made it a 4-0 inning and lead for the Wildcats.

Belhaven was able to get one run back in the top of the third after a throwing error allowed a run to come in from third on the play. Still with a three run advantage and Settle in the circle, the Wildcats were in a good position through the rest of the game.

They had prime chances to add to their lead in both the fifth and sixth innings, but some slightly to aggressive base running led to a Belhaven triple play in the fifth. In the sixth LC had runners at first and second with no one out and were only able to pick up one insurance run on a Walters single up the middle, making the game 5-2 at that point.

The three run lead was more than enough for Settle to get the final three batters out in order in the seventh to secure her 13th win of the season in her 15th complete game. She threw 7.0 strong innings giving up two runs, only one of them earned, with two strikeouts.

Speedsters Shelby Bergeron and Briley Johnston each had a pair of his in the game and stole a total of four bases between them. Sami Walters added a pair of RBIs as well.

The Wildcats and Blazers finish their series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Wildcat Park. The Wildcats have already secured a spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament next week but have the opportunity to improve their seeding with two wins tomorrow over the Blazers and a Concordia loss to UT Dallas.
