Wildcats Drop First Game to UTD

3/2/2018 11:55:00 PM

Box Score

The Louisiana College baseball team finally returned to game action after multiple weather delays over the last two weeks, opening American Southwest Conference play in the process. The Wildcats dropped the first game of a three game series with the University of Texas at Dallas 5-2. LC and UTD will finish their series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm at Billy Allgood Field.

The Wildcats started strong on Friday scoring the first run of the game just three batters into the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Brady Atkins ripped a double to left and then scored two batters later as Keelyn Johnson singled into left center plating Atkins from second. The inning ended on a ground ball double play three pitches later but LC had the early lead.

LC added to their lead in the next inning when Deuaton Delgado scampered home on an infield single by freshman catcher Ty Morgan. LC scored two runs on five hits in the first two innings of the game but UTD all-conference pitcher Jamie Andriot settled into the game and only allowed two more hits over the next five innings of work on the night.

The turning point in the game came in the top of the third innings when UTD hit a 2-out, 2-run homerun to that put them on top 3-2 in the game. Behind the stellar pitching of Andriot, the Comets had the momentum and added some insurance to their lead in the fourth on an RBI double to right, then again in the fifth thanks to a bases loaded walk.

After Andriot exited the game after throwing seven strong innings, the Wildcats got their chance to take on the Comet bullpen and Dustin Brown led off the frame with a double to center. A walk to Delgado and a passed ball put runners at second and third with just one away in the inning. The rally ended there however as Blaine Ouber struck out and Hunter Bower flew out to left leaving the runners in scoring position.

Eight different hits came from eight different Wildcats in the game with Keelyn Johnson and Ty Morgan providing RBI hits in the game. Blayne Haro suffered the loss in the game after allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work. Phillip Vidrine provided great support out of the bullpen with 5.0 innings giving up only two hits and striking out five along the way.
