2/22/2018 12:24:00 PM

Just a week after playing six games in three days, picking up six wins in the process, the Louisiana College baseball team almost engaged in a similar challenge this weekend, scheduled to play four games in two days against Austin College in Sherman, Texas. The series opening doubleheader scheduled for Saturday has been postponed, the teams will now play just one doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The Roos have only played one game on the young season as they enter the weekend set with the Wildcats, a 6-4 win over Dallas Christian. In that game, third baseman Brett Taff went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Designated hitter James Arguello went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a 2-run double in the bottom of the first to plate their first two runs of the season.

Starting pitcher Christian Thomas went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in the no-decision. After building a 4-0 lead through five innings, the Roos allowed four runs to Dallas Christian in the top of the sixth taking the win chance from Thomas as he left the game in the sixth. The Roos' bullpen was solid in relief, throwing the final 3.2 innings without allowing a run to score and only surrendering four hits.

Austin College is scheduled to play two more American Southwest Conference teams in their next two series following this weekend. They will take on Sul Ross State next weekend and LeTourneau on March 6 in Longview, Texas.

Louisiana College  6-0

The Wildcats came out of the gate strong with six wins over three days over Rust College and Loyola of New Orleans. They scored a total of 83 runs over the six game weekend and hit .411 as a team during that time. Of the six players that played and started every game over the weekend, all of them hit over .350, with senior Sully Martin leading the charge at .579 for the weekend, earning him the ASC Hitter of the Week honor.

Martin went 11-for-19 at the plate, scored 10 runs and drove in eight more in the 2-hole of the lineup. Deauton Delgado showed off his power all weekend, with four doubles, and a long opposite field homerun, the first of the season for LC, giving him an .842 slugging percentage. Five of his nine total hits went for extra bases. Leadoff batter Brady Atkins reached base 16 times total and scored a team high 12 runs. The offense was patient at the plate, drawing 13 walks and averaged an impressive 13.8 runs per game.

On the mound for the Wildcats it was a mixed bag of results. Carson Bolyer was the most dominant in his 5.0 innings of work, allowing just one hit with six strikeouts, and included four perfect innings of work to start the game. Hunter Parker and Caleb Nunez also picked up wins along with Bolyer without allowing a run to score, while Phillip Vidrine, Andrew Robinson, and Blayne Haro got wins while allowing just three runs among them.

This weekend is the final non-conference tune up for the Wildcats before they begin play in the ASC. The first opponent will be the University of Texas at Dallas as they make their way to Billy Allgood Field for a three game series on March 2-3. The Wildcats and Comets will play a single game on Friday night at 6pm, and finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon starting at 12pm.
