Ladies Get Another Shot at Comets

1/31/2018 11:03:00 AM

Less than a week after falling short of a double-digit comeback in Texas, the Louisiana College women's basketball team will get another chance to take down one of the top teams in the American Southwest Conference, the University of Texas at Dallas. The Wildcats begin a six-game, season-ending home stand with the game scheduled for Thursday night at Rapides Parish Coliseum.

UT Dallas 16-3 (10-2)  |  T-1st ASC East

The Comets have lost just one game since moving into the 2018 portion of the schedule, a 67-55 loss at Concordia. The Comets have been the conference's best defensive team for the majority of the season, holding opponents to an average of 54.1 points per game. The 73 points that the Wildcats scored against UTD last week was the most the Comets have allowed in a single game all year. Offensively the Comets are led by sophomore guard Victoria Pena, who is scoring 15.8 points per game of the team's 64.8 average. Pena has been named ASC East Division Player of the Week on four different occasions this season. UTD currently sits tied with ETBU atop the ASC East standings, but with the head-to-head tiebreaker on their side at this point in the season thanks to their 59-55 win over the Tigers in early January.

Louisiana College  10-8 (6-6)  |  4th ASC East

The Wildcats almost completed a big comeback against the Comets last Saturday, but could not find the stop they needed defensively or the basket on the other end to maintain their momentum. LC continues to be one of just three teams scoring more than 70 points per game in the conference, along with Mary Hardin-Baylor and UT Tyler. The loss on Saturday was the first on a Saturday for the Wildcats in several weeks, but they still finished the week with a win and a loss for the week. Brooke Jones still sits at the top of the LC scoring with a 17.2 point per game average, second highest in the ASC. She is also just 24 points away from joining the prestigious 1,000 point, 500 rebound club. Kourtney McGhee has also been a great compliment to the inside play from Jones, scoring 13.0 points per game along with 3.6 assists a night.

The Wildcats begin their stretch of the last six games of the regular season, all on their home floor. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night at Rapides Coliseum with live stats and video available via the links provided above.
