For the second time in three weeks the Louisiana College track and field teams competed against schools from across the region in at McNeese State University in the second indoor meet of the month. Overall the Wildcats competed with similar times and distances as in the meet two weeks ago, but there were some new personal records set on the women's side. The Wildcats will now transition into preparation for the outdoor schedule that begins on March 3 at Mississippi College.
The men added a new event to their docket for this trip to Lake Charles, taking part in the shot put for the first time in program history. The pair of Wildcat throwers,
Richard Breaux and
Kyle Sarrazin, each posted good marks early in their attempts. Breaux tossed his best 11.40m (37-5') on his second attempt, setting the new school record in the process. Sarrazin was just off the mark of Breaux with an 11.05m (36-3.75') toss on his first attempt. The only other even for the men on Friday was the 55 meter dash, where Hosie Thomas III posted a time of 7.39 seconds and
A.J. Long finished in 8.14 seconds, neither one besting their times submitted in the previous meet.
On the women's side however, two new personal bests were set on the track by Heavenlee Sanders in the women's 55 meter race and Qwaniqua Howard in the 200 meters. Sanders, in her only event of the day, shaved 0.04 second off her time from two weeks ago, finishing at 8.15 seconds. Howard, on the other hand, took more than one full second off her time in the 200 meters, finishing second in her heat with a time of 28.58 seconds.Â
Elsewhere on the track for the women,
Nora Day earned a spot in the 55 meter hurdles finals with a time of 9.76, despite clipping the second hurdles during the run. The slight misstep and impact on her knee prevented her from running in the finals due to precautionary reasons. Mysherie Johnson, making her first competition of the season, posted a time of 1:03.53 in the 400 meters, just one second off her personal best set last season.
In the two field events for the women, Howard turned her personal best on the track into a 4.39m (14-5') effort in the long jump, also setting the new school best in that event. The mark was only one half inch longer than the distance jumped by Day at 4.38m (14-4.5').
Kennedy Hall was the only other competition for the women in the field events, throwing 9.15m (30-0.5') in her main event the shot put.
The Wildcats begin preparation for the outdoor season which begins on March 3 with a meet in Jackson, Miss. LC will compete in six total meets, primarily in the state of Louisiana, plus the American Southwest Conference championships near the end of April.
