Baseball Heads West to Sul Ross

It was a hard fought series between Louisiana College and Hardin-Simmons last week that the Wildcats lost two games to one, giving them a 6-6 conference record and putting them in the sixth spot in the American Southwest Conference standings with 12 conference games left in the season. This week LC takes their longest road trip of the season to Alpine, Texas to take on Sul Ross State University.

3974The Lobos come into the series with the Wildcats on a six game losing streak, including back-to-back sweeps at the hands of East Texas Baptist University and the University of Texas at Dallas. Sul Ross is averaging 5.1 runs per game and opponents are scoring an average of 7.1 runs against them per game. As a team they are hitting .277 on the year with 12 home runs. Junior Ryan Almager leads the team with a .368 batting average, with 39 hits, 25 runs batted in, and four home runs. Two other players are batting over .300 on the season.

Sul Ross ranks last in the ASC in team pitching with a 6.42 earned run average and has allowed a conference high 271 hits, 193 runs, and 149 walks. Junior Cody Remore leads the team with a 3.22 ERA and a 4-3 overall record this season. He leads the team in innings pitched with 44.2 including the teams only complete game this year. He has allowed 20 runs on 40 hits this year with 35 total strikeouts and a .242 opponents batting average. The Lobos have five other pitchers with more than 20.0 innings of work this season, and six pitchers with double digit appearances.

5201The Wildcats had one of their best pitching performances last series against Hardin-Simmons allowing just two earned runs to the Cowboys in the series defeat. Austin Thompson was named the ASC pitcher of the week after his 6.0 inning one-hit, 11 strikeout performance in the Wildcats lone win of the series. Thompson is second on the team with a 3.30 earned run average but leads the team with 45 strikeouts this season and ranks second in the conference in Ks. Charlie Waddingham leads LC with a 1.91 ERA with two complete games and 34 strikeouts allowing a team low for pitchers with three starts or more, 10 earned runs. LC is second in the ASC with a 3.33 ERA and is third in runs allowed this year.

Offensively, the Wildcats rank third in the conference in batting with a .310 team average, one of just three teams in the conference batting over .300 this year. Seth Stevens continues to lead the team in batting with a .411 average with 39 hits and 29 RBI, both team highs, with four home runs and a .611 slugging percentage. Ashton Martin is just outside the .400 club with a .397 batting average this year and is tied for second on the team with 29 hits.

LC and Sul Ross will play a three game series starting on Friday night with a single game beginning at 7 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The Wildcats return to Billy Allgood Field next weekend for a three game series against the top team in the conference and the #7 team in Division-III the University of Texas at Tyler. Friday night will also serve as the Wildcats Austism Awareness game, and Saturday is the annual "Cats Crush Cancer" Day before the day's doubleheader.
