Softball Opens ASC Play This Weekend

After a Saturday sweep of Millsaps and a split in a mid week double-header at Centenary, the Louisiana College Wildcats softball team opens its 2017 American Southwest Conference schedule this week with a three game series against Concordia. The Wildcats enter the series with a 3-1 record, and Concordia will play its first games of the season this weekend in Pineville. The series will start with a double-header on Friday, with game one beginning at 4 p.m. and Saturday's single game starting at 12 p.m.

2507Concordia finished the 2016 season near the bottom of the ASC, with a 5-25 record, and 8-32 overall mark, one of only two teams not to reach double digit conference wins in the season. They finished with a .241 team batting average, lowest in the conference, only six points lower the the Wildcats team batting average last year. They scored the fewest runs and got the least number of hits in the conference in 2016, and were one of three team wit less than 100 RBI on the season.

They return one of their starting pitchers from last year's team, Shelby Burrus, who finished last year with a 3-9 record and a 3.94 ERA in 89.1 innings of work. The team ERA was 5.11 in 2016 and they surrendered a a total of 229 runs with 185 of them earned runs.

5201The Wildcats are off to a 3-1 through the first four games of the season for the sixth year in a row. The offense had their best performance so far in the second game against Centenary, pounding out 12 hits in the game, but only scoring five runs in the victory. Shea Smith and Mattie Stine are the two leading hitters through the first four games with a .600 and .583 average respectively.  Stine leads the team in hits with seven hits adn three RBI.

In the circle, Savannah Settle and Taylor Leger have had two quality outings each through the first four games, with Leger getting wins in both of her starts. Settle and Leger both have earned run averages under 1.00 on the season and Settle is limiting opponents to a .182 batting average against the Wildcats.
