Lady Wildcats Look to Carry Momentum into Conference

The Louisiana College women's basketball team had a preseason goal to finish the first month of the season with a perfect 6-0 record. While the loss in Chicago to Wheaton College prevented the unblemished record, the Wildcats have the opportunity to end November with a still impressive 5-1 record should they take the American Southwest Conferecne season opener over McMurry Universtiy on Thursday night. They will then try and carry their momentum into December with a game on Saturday against Hardin-Simmons University. Both games will be played at the Rapides Parish Coliseum, with Thursday's game tipping off at 5:30 pm and Saturday's at 2:00 pm.

McMurry | 1-3 (0-0)

4511The War Hawks come into the ASC opening weekend with a 1-3 record with their lone win coming over Randall University last week 61-53, their best offensive performance of the young season. In their last outing, on Saturday, the lost a three point game to ASC foe East Texas Baptist University in a non-conference contest 64-61. Sophomore forward Skyler Reyna leads McMurry in points scored this season with a 13.8 per game average, the only player with a double digit scoring average on the team. She also ranks second on the team in rebounding at 7.8 per game, one rebound behind team leader Sham Hunter with 8.8 per game. The War Hawks are scoring an average of 59.5 points per game through their first four and have been in tight contests each time allowing just 62.0 points to their opponents. McMurry has done well shooting from the floor and the free throw line, having the second best field goal percentage and best free throw percentage.

Hardin-Simmons | 2-2 (0-0)

3975After winning their first two games of the season in the Daly Seven Tip-Off Classic over Guilford and Meredith, the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls have lost their last two in a row to Trinity (TX) and Cornell College. In their four game this year HSU has averaged 59.2 points with their best effort coming in their convincing 80-51 win over Meredith. The Cowgirls are shooting 40.3% from the field on the season and 62.2% from the free throw line. Senior forward Danie Mabry leads the team with 12.5 points per game, the only player with a double digit average on the team, followed by Addison Garcia with 9.0 per game. The Cowgirls have also been exceptional in rebounding this season despite not having a player with more than a 5.0 rebound per game average. They are out-rebounding their opponents by an average of 11.5 per game, the best margin in the conference.

Louisiana College | 4-1 (0-0)

5201The Wildcats are off to their best start through the first five games of the season since the 2014-15 season where they started a perfect 5-0. A win on Thursday would match that team that ended its season in the ASC tournament semi-finals. A win on Saturday over a touch Hardin-Simmons team would match the best start to a season since 2013 at 6-1. The Wildcats have relied on their senior leadership through the first few games to carry them to this point with center Brooke Jones earning conference player of the week honors twice in the first two weeks of the awards. She leads LC with a 19.8 point and 9.4 rebound per game average, ranking second in teh conference in scoring and fourth in rebounds. Point guard Kourtney McGhee has been excellent in the early part of the season as well, putting in 14.2 points per game with 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game to go along with that. The added depth from Zharian Maxmillion, Janae Smith, RyDeja McQuarn, Taylor Payne have made the Wildcats dynamic on both ends of the floor this season, with the ability to score points in bunches. LC is second in the ASC in scoring at 73.4 points per game and second in free throw shooting with at 68.8%.

The first Louisiana College basketball game in Rapides Parish Coliseum is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm Thursday night as the Wildcats open ASC play against McMurry.Tickets are $10 for those two years and older and LC students, faculty, and staff will be admitted for free with their campus ID. Louisiana College athletics will be providing a shuttle bus for students that will leave from the parking lot between MPAC and H.O. West, 30 minutes prior to tip-off of the women's game all season. Seating is limited and students are encouraged to sign-up in the student development office to secure their spot on the shuttle.
