Women With Big Chance to Make Move in East

The Louisiana College women's basketball team are presented with a excellent opportunity to make a move up the standings over the next two games.  Currently sitting in the final tournamnet spot in the ASC Eastern Division, the Wildcats will take on the two team positioned directly ahead of them in the standings, UT Tyler on Thursday and LeTourneau on Saturday. Both the Patriots and Yellowjackets sit at 6-4 in conference play, 1.5 games ahead of the Wildcats for the second spot behind the 10-1 UT Dallas.

UT Tyler | 13-5 (6-4)  T-2nd ASC East

2519After beginning the season ranked in the top 25 polls and picked to win the ASC East, the Patriots sit at 13-5 and 6-4 on the season. They started their season 5-0 before dropping their first two conference games to Sul Ross and Howard Payne. Currently they are on a two game winning streak and are winners of five of their last six games overall.  The only loss in that stretch coming to UT Dallas on January 12.  The Patriots are led by their All-American senior guard Michelle Obach who is averaging 14.6 points per game, sixth best in the conference, and D'Onna Matthews at 10.7 points per game. They are the conferences best offensive team, averaging 76.2 points per game and the fourth best defensive allowing just 65.2 to their opponents. They also have the conferences best shooting percentage at 43.5% from the field and the second best percentage from 3-point range.

LeTourneau | 9-9 (6-3)  T-2nd ASC East

3067The Yellowjackets have alternated wins and losses over the last month of games, never winning or losing more than one game at a time. They will take on the 3-14 ETBU Tigers Thursday night before back-to-back games against the Wildcats. LeTourneau has the top two offensive players in the ASC in Crystal Jones and LaTanya Drakes who average 20.9 and 17.5 points per game this season. Jones is a 39.2% field goal shooter while Drakes ranks second in the ASC shooting 44.2% from the floor. The Yellowjackets have the fourth highest scoring offense at 69.5 points per game with the 12th ranked defense allowing 75.3 points to their opponents. As a team they are shooting 36.9% from the field, a conference worst 24.8% from 3-point range, and 69.1% from the free throw line.

5201Despite the two conferences losses last week to Ozarks and UT Dallas, the Wildcats still control their own destiny regarding their posistion in the ASC tournamnet at season's end.  The Wildcat currently sit in the final spot out of the East facing both the teams ahead of them twice over the next two weeks. LC ranks fifth in the conference in scoring, putting in 69.1 points per game but allowing a conference worst 75.7 points to their opponents.  Brooke Jones contines to be the Wildcats biggest offensive presence under the basket with a 12.1 point per game average and 6.7 rebound per game average, both tops on the team.  Karlee Teddlie is the only other Wildcat putting in more than 10 points per game at 10.2 per game. 

The Wildcats play two of their final three road games of the season this week, before beginning a five-game homestand that starts with the same two teams they take on this week. The WIldcats are 1.5 games out of 2nd place in the East and only one game ahead of Ozarks for the final spot in the tournament.
