The Louisiana College men's basketball got a much needed win on Thursday night over Belhaven in front of an energized home crowd, 82-71. The Wildcats played with an intensity and urgency that seemed to be lacking over the last few weeks. Four different players scored in double figures for the Wildcats as LC shot better than 50% from the field in the game.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start with back-to-back jumpers from Travis Schultz to take a 4-0 lead, 90 seconds into the game. Belhaven stormed back thanks to some productive shooting from beyond the arc and took as much as an eight point lead in the first 10 minutes of play. Down by eight with 11:20 to go in the first half, the Wildcats put together an 18-4 run to go ahead by six, 31-25 on a layup from Brandon Watkins at the 6:11 mark of the half.
The Blazers got within three a couple of minutes later but another good stretch from the Wildcats to end the quarter, gave LC the advantage going into the break. A 13-3 run over the final five minutes gave LC the 46-33 halftime lead, capped off by a 3-pointer from Travis Schultz with 12 seconds left in the half.
Belhaven came out strong in the second half and pulled within five of the Wildcats after a 10-2 run in the first two and a half minutes. LC answered back thanks to Taylan Grogan scoring seven of the Wildcats next eight points to put LC back up by double digits at 56-43. The closest the Blazers would get the rest of the way would be seven points at the 13:03 mark of the half.
Raheem Regis led the Wildcats with 20 points and nine rebounds, extending his double digit scoring streak to ten consecutive games.
Taylan Grogan had another solid night with 14 points,
Timothy Stokes was all over the floor with 13 points, eight assists, and five rebounds, and
Travis Schultz ended with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The Wildcats head out for on a four game ASC East road trip for the remainder of the month of January with trips to Ozarks, UT Dallas, UT Tyler, and LeTourneau. LC will return home on February 2 with an ASC game against LeTourneau at H.O. West Fieldhouse.
