Baseball Looks to Continue Momentum Against McMurry

4/8/2016 7:00:00 AM

Louisiana College baseball (7-18, 3-9) will host conference opponent McMurry (13-15, 8-7) in a three game series this weekend at Billy Allgood Field. The double-header for this series will be on Friday with game one at 4pm and game two at 6pm.

The Wildcats are coming off a weekend where they played a total of five games in three days.  A conference series at LeTourneau and a double-header on Sunday that was rescheduled from early March.  LC was able to have a winning weekend after sweeping Sunday's games for a 3-2 record.

Hitting Coach Andrew Shelton said that those wins were important for the team at this point in the season, "The wins were huge because we're getting into the second half of the season and we knew we had a young ball club coming into the season, and its all about getting hot at the right time. We've got about 12 conference games left and thats when you want to get hot, building some momentum into the second half, thats huge for a young ball club."

The Wildcats will face off with a McMurry team this weekend that are coming off a series sweep of Mary Hardin-Baylor and a loss to the #1 ranked Trinity (TX) early this week. Shelton said about the War Hawks, "They lost a lot from their club last year but they're a very athletic team, they can throw the ball well they can hit it ball well, and we just have to play our game.  If we play the way we know we can play we can come away with the win."

LC will send Austin Thompson, Tyler Lamers, and Charlie Waddingham to the mound to start each game of the series.  Thomason is fresh off of his school record 15 strikeout performance against Rust and the coaching staff are hoping that performance will boost his confidence for the stretch run. "We hope this win gives him some confidence to help us going forward, because he has it in him and is very capable of begin very good for us", pitching Coach Stuart Morgan said.

Logan Philips will continue to be one of the important members of the Wildcat lineup.  He leads the team with a .315 average and 16 RBI on the season.  "Logan Phillips has been a fireplug for us, he's an emotional leader in our club house, he gets the guys fired up and he's in the middle of our lineup.  We're depending on him for some big hits and big 2-out RBIs and he's delivered for us and we're going to need him to keep doing that."  Phillips along with leadoff batter Sully Martin will look to set the tone for the offense going into the series.

Thing to watch:

Sully Martin is 5 stolen bases away from breaking the single season record for steals.
