Baseball Loses Doubleheader to Concordia

3/25/2016 12:30:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Louisiana College baseball team would hold leads in both games of Thursday's doubleheader against Concordia, but in both game the Wildcats would see those leads disappear on late inning rallies by the Tornadoes.  LC held a 4-3 lead through 5 innings of the 7 inning game one, and the Wildcats held a 3-2 lead through 3 innings of game two.  Concordia would put an 8 spot on the board in the 6th of game one and a 3-run seventh in game two to seal both victories.

The Wildcats fell behind Concordia after the first inning of play in game one after the Tornadoes did what they would do all night, manufacture runs.  A single, a steal of a base, a sacrifice bunt, a hit to move the runners over, that was the recipe for Concordia.  They jumped out to a 3-0 in the first and held that until the Wildcats stormed back in the third.  With two outs in the inning Sully Martin's single sandwiched between 2 hit batters loaded the bases for the Wildcats.  That's when Logan Phillips stepped to the plate and rocked a double into left field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 3 a piece.  Tim Griffith would make it back to back RBI hits with a single through the left side and LC would lead 4-3 at the end of three innings.

The Wildcats held that lead until the top of the 6th when one costly error opened the flood gates for Concordia.  A throwing error on a bunt attempt allowed a runner to score to tie the game and extend the inning for the Tornado. They would get a key double to extend their 5-4 lead before eventually loading the bases and shortstop Adam Ortega hitting a grand slam over the left field wall for an 8-run inning to seal the 12-5 win for Concordia.

Six different Wildcats had hits in the first game including Phillips' 3-run double, Zane Corbell and Cody McNeal both also had two-baggers in the game.  LC sent five pitchers to the mound, none going more than 2.2 innings.  Deauton Delgado started the game and faced the most batters at 16.

In the night cap game the Wildcats would turn the table on Concordia and they took the lead after the first inning of play.  Logan Phillips opened the scoring with an RBI single to bring in Sully Martin and then Phillips came home on a triple into center field by Keifer Moore, and LC would lead 2-0 after one.  Concordia would answer right back in the top of the second by using the same formula, get a runner aboard and steal a base or bunt him over, and they did just that on a double steal of second and third to set up a run on a sacrifice fly and another on a Wildcat throwing error to tie the game.

The Wildcats retook the lead in the third on Dylan Keller base hit to right, but the Tornadoes would answer right back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth.  The game stayed tied at 3 until Concordia was able to plate 3 runs on a sacrifice fly and a 2-run double in the inning to go up 6-3 late. They would add another after a leadoff double by Ortega in the eighth to take game two and the series 7-3 over the Wildcats.

Both Logan Phillips and Sully Martin had 2 hits in the second game, while 5 other Wildcats contributed to the 9 total for the game.  Tyler Lamers pitched 5.1 innings of quality baseball in relief but took the tough luck loss in the game.

The series finale with Concordia will be Friday starting at Noon at Billy Allgood Field in Pineville.  After Friday's game the team will have the week off from games and school before traveling to Longview, TX for a three game weekend series with LeTourneau starting on April 1.  The Wildcats will return home for a Sunday doubleheader against Rust College on April 3, a series that was rained out earlier in March.
