Coming off a weekend that saw the Wildcats baseball team get swept for the second time by Belhaven, the team is preparing for another quality opponent in Concordia this week for another three game series. The teams will play a double header on Thursday with Game 1 at 4pm and Game 2 at 6pm, and then the series finale will take place on Good Friday at 12pm, all at Billy Allgood Field at Louisiana College.
The Wildcats (4-13, 2-4) will look to try and push the issue on the base paths in order to put pressure on the Concordia defense this week. Coach Byrnes talked about base running last week in the Belhaven series, "We ran the bases well when we got on, we were able to steal some bases. We lead the conference in stolen bases, we've got the lowest batting average, but once we get on we can make things happen and we're going to have to do that until our bats come around."
Both leadoff batter
Sully Martin and
Kiefer Moore have double digit steals on the season at 14 and 11 respectively, and Martin holds the record for most steals in a series set earlier this year. Base running against Concordia could prove challenging as the Tornados have one of the best pitching staffs in the conference, anchored by Lane Hobbs (5-0) who has a miniscule 0.23 ERA in 5 starts and 38.1 innings of work this season.
"We're going to have to play our A game and some of our guys are going to have to have unbelievable weekends but we're very capable of doing it, if we can get all 3 phases of the game together we'll be ok." Byrnes said about the series against Concordia.
Probable starters for the Wildcats will be
Deauton Delgado (0-1) to the mound for game 1 on Thursday and
Charlie Waddingham (0-3) for game 3 on Friday. The game 2 starter has yet to be determined.
Doubleheader Thursday (Game 1 - 4pm, Game 2 - 6pm)
Single Game Good Friday (12pm)
