Wildcats Late Rally Comes Up Short

A four run top of the eighth inning pulled the Wildcats to within 2-runs of Belhaven in game one of the three game series Friday night, but the Blazers we able to hang on in the ninth and pick up the 9-7 victory over the Wildcats.  The teams are scheudled to play a doubleheader starting tomorrow at 1pm with game 3 set for 4pm.  You can follow the games live by clicking HERE.

The Wildcats fell behind early in the game when an RBI double in the bottom of the first brought in the first run of the game for Belhaven.  The Blazers would pull out to a 4-0 lead before LC would get on the board on a Logan Phillips 2-run homerun in the top of the fourth that made the score 4-2 Blazers.  After Belhaven answered with a 2-run homer of their own and and RBI single in the fourth and fifth innings respectively, the WIldcats trailed 8-2 going into the eighth inning.

Sully Martin led off the inning with a single and then stole second base, one of his 2 steals on the night, then after a dropped thrid strike allowed Dustin Brown to reach first base, it was Logan Phillips that provided another spark with 2-run double down the left field line that scored Martin and pinch runner Dylan Keller and make the score 8-4.  After a Zane Corbell single, Phillips would come around to score on a fielding error by the Blazers shortstop that also allowed Tyler Lamers to reach base.  Then a bases loaded wild pitch would give the Wildcats their fourth run of the inning and make it an 8-6 game in the bottom of the eighth.

Belhaven would add an insurance run in the eighth on a 2-out single.  Then in the ninth Sully Martin reached second on an error by the second baseman and later came in to score on a throwing error by the catcher after Martin swiped thrid base.  The Wildcats would get the tying run to the plate in Logan Phillips after a walk to Dylan Keller, but Phillips would not be able to come through for a third time in the game as he grounded into a game ending double play.

Phillips went 3-4 in the game with a double, a homerun, and four RBI's.  Deauton Delgado (0-1) took the loss for the Wildcats going 3.1 innings giving up five runs, on four hits.

Game 2 is Saturday at 1pm and Game 3 at 4pm.
