Softball Takes Series Win Over Hardin-Simmons

Box Score

Pitching and defense will take you a long way in both baseball and softball and that was certainly evident in game two and three of the Lady Wildcats series with Hardin-Simmons.  One day after Darian Thacker tossed a complete game, 2-hit shutout, in game two, Savannah Settle would take the ball again for game three and pitch 5.0+ innings of 1-hit softball in route to a 2-1 Lady Wildcats win on Tuesday afternoon.

Coach Lyn Bankston said after the game three win, "We've been surviving with our defense and our pitching staff up to this point. We're averaging about 7-10 hits per game.  Hardin-Simmons did a great job with their pitching and limited us to 7 hits last game and only 4 today but they only got 1 hit. Defense and pitching shut them down."

Savannah Settle had the Hardin-Simmons batters guessing through much of the game as they managed only 1 hit and only managed 2 total base runners through the first 5 innings.  Coming off her stellar performance in game two Darian Thacker was call out of the bullpen in the 5th inning and was able to compete the 6-out save for the Lady Wildcats in the process.

LC did all of their scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning after loading the bases with 1-out in the inning it was back-to-back singles by Morgan Wampler and Regan LeJeune that gave the Lady Wildcats the two runs they need to eventually win the game.  "Their pitcher did a good job of mixing up balls and strikes," Coach Bankston said of Cowgirls pitcher Tori Rodriguez, "you cant throw a strike every time so she did a good job mixing up on us and kind of kept us off balance, but we got people in scoring position and we got them in."

Hardin-Simmons made things interesting once again the latter stages of the game with a well executed suicide squeeze to pull with 1 run, but Thacker would not allow anything more for the Cowgirls in the top of the seventh.

Jordan Mason went 1-2 in the game with a run scored and Morgan Wampler had a hit and an RBI in the game as well.

The Lady Wildcats will continue a busy week of games with a trip to Jackson, MS to take on Belhaven University in more ASC softball play this weekend.  They will play at 3pm on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.  The Lady Wildcats will return home for a Thursday and Friday series on March 24 and 25 against LeTourneau.
