Sul Ross took game one 5-1 on the back of a stellar pitching performance from Eli Gallego, who tossed a complete game two-hitter to give the Lobos the win.
LC would start out game one, as Wildcat starting pitcher
Trey Ducote made quick work of the Lobos in the first inning. But a line drive back up the middle by Sul Ross designated hitter Connor Griffith would hit Ducote in the foot in the top of the second, limiting the freshman hurler the rest of the afternoon.
The Wildcats would score their only runs of game one on an RBI sac bunt from senior second baseman
Cary Myers in the bottom of the third inning that scored freshman shortstop
James Santiago.
Game two was a back-and-forth slugfest that saw the Wildcats, despite several outstanding comeback efforts, come up just short in the end as they dropped the series finale 10-8.
Both teams would go scoreless in the first two innings of teh nightcap, but the Lobos struck yet again on a big inning in the top of the third, scoring foru runs in the frame on a 3 RBI double off the centefield wall from second baseman Shane Sawyer and an RBI single from first baseman Eli Gallego.
LC would answer in the bottom half of the third with three runs of their own, coming on back-to-back bases loaded walks issued to
Mark Riendeau and
Garrett Parsons and an RBI fielder's choice from
Jermaine Liggins that gave the Cats a new life at 4-3.
The Lobos stretched the lead out to 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run to left centerfield from Sawyer, his third home run of the series.
The Wildcats would again answer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 6-6 on an RBI single from
Kade Van Norman, an RBI sac fly by Riendeau, and an RBI single from Parsons to cap another three-run frame for LC.
After Griffith put Sul Ross back ahead 8-6 with a two RBI single in the top of the seventh, LC freshman centerfielder
Sully Martin would come up with a clutch two-out, two RBI double to right field that drove in Santiago and pinch runner
Dylan Keller to tie the game at 8-8
But that would be the comeback that LC would be able to put together, as the Lobos kept the pressure on with two more runs in the eighth inning to win by the eventual final score of 10-8.
Martin led LC at the plate on the day, as he collected a team-high three hits combined in the two games and drove in two runs.
The Wildcats fall to 6-13 overall and 4-11 in ASC play. They will travel to Belton, Texas next week to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor in a three-game ASC series beginning on Friday.
