1/9/2015 2:34:00 AM

Box Score Alpine, TX - Despite being challenged by the struggling home team, the Louisiana College men's basketball team improved to 4-5 on the season and 4-2 in the American Southwest Conference with an 82-73 win on the road at Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas.

The Wildcats saw a second-half 10-point lead cut to three with 7:43 to play when the Lobos' Luke Taylor's 3-point shot cut the LC lead to 64-61. In the game's final seven minutes, the Lobos could get no closer than that 3-point margin, before the Wildcats finally put things away by hitting 7-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes. The finishing touch came on Anthony Gaines Junior's steal and slam dunk with :25 to play that made the score 81-73, LC.

Gaines led the Wildcats with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Four other Wildcats finished in double figures. Kevin Lewis had 16 points and nine rebounds, Kevin Cottonham added 12 points, eight assists and three steals.  Finishing with 11 points each were Dillon Mandeville and Steve Evans.

The Wildcats had a solid shooting night as they hit 22 of 59 shots for 49-percent. They also made 18 of 27 free throws, holding a decided edge over the Lobos who hit just 8 of 15. LC was also strong on the backboards, as the Wildcats finished with a 41-35 rebounding edge.

Like the LC women's team, the LC men have yet to play a true home game in 2014-15 as renovations to the H.O. West Field House continue. The Wildcats will again be on the road this Saturday, January 10 when they travel to Brownwood, Texas to face Howard Payne at 3 p.m.
