Box Score Box ScoreUpdated Season StatsUpdated ASC StandingsAfter a slow first half found the Louisiana College men's basketball team in big hole early, it was the Wildcats' reserves who gave the team life and helped lead LC to a classic 84-79 win over East Texas Baptist on Tuesday night in Alexandria.
The Wildcat bench made their prescence felt in a big way throughout the entire second half, but it was a four minute flurry late in the game that turned the game around in favor of
Gene Rushing's squad.
Trailing 53-43 with 8:17 remaining in regulation, the Wildcats would start their inspiring 16-4 run on a layup from sophomore center
Raheem Regis, who did not check into the game until the second half.
Two
Julius Jackson free throws brought the score closer at 53-47, and was followed by back-to-back-to-back three pointers, one from Jackson and two from
Dillon Mandeville.
Mandeville's second three-pointer was the ultimate highlight of an eventful night for the Cats, as it came with LC trailing by two points at 57-55. The sophomore sharpshooter drained the long range shot with a defender in his face, drew the foul, and completed a rare four-point play to give the Wildcats a 59-55 lead at the 4:48 mark of the half.
It was the first lead for the Wildcats since the first media timeout of the first half when they held a 9-7 advantage.
Junior
Anthony Gaines, Jr., who was held in check for most of the night by a scrappy ETBU defense, put the game into overtime when he grabbed a rebound off of a potential game-winning layup from LC point guard
Kevin Cottonham, drew a shooting foul, and hit one of his two free throw attempts to tie the game at 65-65 at the end of regulation.
The overtime period belonged to Cottonham and
Kevin Lewis, as the pair of LC juniors scored all 19 of the Wildcats' points in the deciding five minute final period to help LC pull away for the win.
After going just 3-13 from behind the three-point arc and shooting 36.4% from the field in the first half, the Wildcats caught fire in the final twenty minutes of regulation and overtime.
LC closed out by going 18-30 (60%) from the field and 7-10 (70%) from three point land after halftime.
The Wildcat bench, which scored the large majority of their 35 points on the night in the second half, ignited the comeback and gave LC they boost they needed to take the win.
LC moves to 5-6 overall with a 5-3 mark in ASC play, which puts them in fifth place in the ASC standings. The Wldcats will take on Texas-Tyler (1-14 overall, 0-10 in ASC play) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the H.O. West Fieldhouse, which will mark their first true home game of the season.
