Box Score 2 Game One Box ScoreGame Two Box ScoreUpdated Season StatsAfter being no-hit in game one of Saturday's by Choctaw starter Blake Mcilwain, the Louisiana College Wildcats pulled out a tough 3-2 win in their series finale against Mississippi College to win the final series between the two teams as Division III opponents.
Wildcat ace
Madison Lachney tossed his eighth complete game of the season in game one of the twinbill, giving up just five hits and one earned run, but was outdone by Mcilwain, who worked around six walks, a hit by pitch, and two errors to throw the no-hit shutout and down the Wildcats 2-0.
It was the first time the Wildcats have been no-hit since Mississippi College's Tyler Seaman did so against LC during the 2009 season.
Oddly enough, both Seaman and Mcilwain transferred the MC from Jones County Community College in Mississippi College.
The Wildcats had their chances against Mcilwain, particularly a bases loaded situation with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. That rally was ended quickly by the MC right-hander however, as he struck out
Matt Scott and
Garrett Parsons back-to-back before getting
Taylor Beavers to fly out to left fielder Kyle Blount for the third out.
With the momentum all but seized by the Choctaws, LC would look to junior right-handed pitcher
Brand Bignar to once again provide them with a similar spark that he had just two weeks ago against #19 Mary Hardin-Baylor, where he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.
Bignar responded and was outstanding yet again, as he battled through a tough first inning and shut the Choctaw bats down from there, going seven innings while giving up six hits and just one earned run.
MC looked as though they put the game away early, as Bignar was touched for three hits in the top of the first inning, but got out of a potential disaster inning by Choctaw first baseman Chris Casto and getting shortstop Robbie Jernigan to ground out to
Taylor Beavers at shortstop to end the inning with only one run on the board for MC.
The Wildcat bats would immediately respond in the bottom of the first inning, as senior catcher
Kyle Feazell ripped an RBI single to right field that drove in
Darien Bartie to tie the game. Beavers then put LC ahead 2-1 with an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought first baseman
Mark Riendeau across the plate.
After MC tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning with a Spencer Wilson RBI single, LC would again answer in the bottom of the sixth when they were able to take the lead back on a throwing error by Casto at first base on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Beavers.
That error allowed Riendeau to score the go-ahead run and LC's bullpen was able to get out of several jams in the eigth and ninth innings to take the 3-2 win and claim the series.
The series win moved LC's season record to 12-18 overall and 11-13 in ASC play, which places them in a three-way tie for sixth in the conference standings along with Sul Ross and Howard Payne, both of whom own tiebreakers over the Wildcats due to them winning their regular season series against the Wildcats.
LC will face the ASC's hottest team, UT-Dallas, in yet another critical weekend conference series that is scheduled to begin on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Pineville.
