Two four inning frames by Howard Payne was enough to fend off a late rally by the Wildcats in the series finale of Louisiana College's weekend baseball series against the Yellow Jackets, as HPU won 11-7 to take win the rubber match of the ASC series.
The Yellow Jackets would score four runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two run single to centerfield by HPU designated hitter Matthew Daniel to put LC in an early 5-1 hole.
The Wildcats would claw back in the third inning with a
Matt Scott RBI single to right field but back-to-back-to-back walks with the bases loaded with Yellow Jackets in bottom of the fifth inning with cap another four run frame in the fifth by HPU to give them a 9-2 advantage.
HPU would hold an 11-3 advantage going into the top of the ninth before a four run frame by the Wildcats' offense would give LC hope, but it was not enough to cap the comeback as the Wildcats would fall 11-7 in the series finale to drop the series two games to one.
The loss dropped LC's record to 2-10 on the season and 1-8 in conference play. The Wildcats will take on in-state opponent LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Pineville.
