Box Score 2 The Louisiana College baseball team swept a doubleheader on Friday from defending ASC champion Texas-Tyler with an 11-0 win in game one followed by a 6-2 win in game two to take the series.
Game One Box Score
The Wildcats struck first in game one, as they put together their finest inning of offensive baseball all season, scoring seven runs on four hits and one Texas-Tyler error to give senior pitcher
Madison Lachney more than enough run support the rest of the way.
LC got on the board first when senior catcher
Kyle Feazell hit a bases loaded RBI single to left field that scored
Kade Van Norman. First baseman
Garrett Parsons and third baseman Will Currier then both drew bases loaded walks to give LC an early 3-0 advantage off of Texas-Tyler ace Jake Beam.
After a
Cary Myers RBI groundout to second base,
Jermaine Liggins hit a bullet to right field that hit off the outfield wall, causing Patriot outfielder Billy Lirely to crash into the wall. With on the ground with an injury that would cause him to come out of the game, Liggins was able to circle the bases for a three RBI inside-the-park home run that capped off the seven run frame.
A Currier RBI single to left field and a Myers RBI single to right field in the bottom of the second inning put LC up 9-0. But Liggins would provide the final offensive fireworks of the day, as he drove an inside fastball down the left field line and over the fence for a two-run home run, which put the Wildcats up by the eventual final score of 11-0.
Liggins' two home run performance in game one was the first by an LC player since Jordan Marks accomplished the same feat in the Wildcats' ASC opening series against LeTourneau in 2012.
Lachney, who had previously fallen to 0-4 on the year despite carrying an ERA under 2.00, picked up his first win of the 2014 campaign by tossing his first career complete game shutout. The senior right hander finished by going all seven innings, striking out three, and giving up just six base hits to the dangerous Texas-Tyler lineup.
Game Two Box Score
The Wildcats would then use some clutch hitting, outstanding defense, and some masterful relief work from senior pitcher
Jacob Trahan to take game two 6-2.
Kade Van Norman ended up at third base with one out in the first inning after leading off the inning with a single to centerfield, one of his four hits on the day. Junior designated hitter
Mark Riendeau then lifted a fly ball to left field that would score Van Norman on an RBI sac fly to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 advantage.
LC would hold firm to that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Wildcat bats were awaken once again for a three run frame. After sophomore outfielder
Darien Bartie reached on a fielder's choice, Riendeau crushed a pitch off the left field wall that brought home Van Norman. Barite would eventually score on a wild pitch while Riendeau would come home on a two-out RBI single by Feazell.
Liggins two more RBI to his day tally in the eighth inning, when he hit a fly ball to right field that snuck in for a two RBI double to give LC the 6-0 cushion.
Despite giving up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning, Trahan was able to finish out the game and secure the 6-2 win and clinch the Wildcats' first series win of the season.
Trahan picked up his first win of the season as he worked 5.2 innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter
Tyler Dixon, who tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball in his first career ASC start.
Liggins would finish the day with two home runs, a double, and seven RBI while Van Norman was the catalyst at the top of the LC lineup, collecting four hits on the day. Feazell also added four hits on the day as well.
The doubleheader sweep brings LC's season record to 4-10 overall and 3-8 in conference play. The two teams will square off again on Saturday at noon in the series finale where a Wildcat win could prove to be critical in their pursuit for one of the eight slots in the 2014 ASC Tournament in May.
