Searching for their first win of the 2013 season, the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats found it in the form of a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Cats found themselves down 1-0 at halftime despite dominating possession for the majority of the half. SAGU managed just two shots in the first 45 minutes compared to 10 for LC, however, one of those two shots by Madeleine Thornley found the back of the net to put
Bruce Deaton's team in an early hole.
But the fight that the Lady Wildcats have shown so far in the 2013 season was never more apparent than when sophomore
Taylor Bergeron was able to tie the game eight minutes into the second half off an assist from
Sarah Thompson.
LC would have several chances to put the game away throughout the second half, as they more than doubled SAGU in the total shot count (23-9), but a few tough breaks and some solid keeper player from SAGU's Haley Shingleton pushed the game into a sudden death overtime.
That is when Bergeron took the game into her own hands, finding the back of the net on a header off of a beautiful pass from Alex Corne to seal the victory.
As a testament to how far Deaton's squad has come since he took over as head coach in 2010, Saturday's 2-1 victory marked his eighth career win as the head coach at LC, a new school record.
With the weight of winning their first game now off of their shoulders, the Lady Wildcats will look to carry their momentum into Thursday's 5 p.m. matchup at home against Wiley College, their third of five consecutive home matches.
