Louisiana College's debut in the ASC Championship Tournament was a sour one, as the Wildcats fell to longtime ASC power Texas Lutheran 4-1 in on Friday afternoon at Irwin Field in Tyler, TX.
With staff ace
Seth Webster on the mound, LC appeared to be in control after
Mark Riendeau gave the Wildcats a 1-0 with an RBI single in the top of the third inning, scoring freshman shortstop Colt Ducote.
But TLU would have an immediate answer, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The big blow came off the bat of Bulldog third baseman Jennings Boothe, a two run double in the left centerfield gap.
The Bulldogs added another run in fifth on an error by LC second baseman
Cary Myers and again in the seventh inning when Boothe scored on a throwing error by
Kyle Feazell attempting to throw out Christian DeBlanc stealing at second.
The Wildcat bats went cold the rest of the way, as TLU starter Jeff Spillane allowed just one hit over his final 4 2/3 innings of work before being replaced by All-American closer Sean Kistler.
LC would have a chance to rally in the ninth inning off Kistler, as
Cary Myers came to the plate representing the tying run after
Taylor Beavers walked and
Jake Hillman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. However, Kistler was able to work out of the jam, striking out Myers before getting Ducote to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and give TLU the 4-1 win.
Webster took the loss for the Wildcats to fall to 10-3 on the season, despite throwing a complete game and giving up just three earned runs. It marks the first time Webster has lost since March 9, when he dropped a 6-1 decision in the Wildcats ASC opening series against LeTourneau.
LC (24-18) will play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the loser of Friday's Texas-Tyler (East #1 seed) vs. Concordia (West #2 seed) matchup.
