Wildcats split doubleheader with Choctaws

3/23/2013 12:08:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Despite collecting just three hits, the Louisiana College Wildcats were able to pick up a 1-0 win in game one of their American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Mississippi College on Friday afternoon.

With both teams going scoreless through the first five and half innings, the Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Will Currier hit a ground ball to Choctaw shortstop Robbie Jernigan that was thrown away trying to cut down LC pinch runner Cody McNeal at third base.

The ball was then touched by an MC player in the dugout, which was ruled dugout interference, advancing McNeal home for the only score of the ballgame.

LC senior Seth Webster was outstanding once again, throwing his fifth consecutive complete game, giving seven hits, walking none, and striking out six.

Choctaw starter Mack Murray was equally as impressive, giving up just three hits, striking out eight, walking one, and giving up just one run, which was unearned.

Three errors by Louisiana College, all coming within the first four innings, were too much for the Wildcats to overcome, as they fell to Mississippi College 6-1 in game two of Friday's doubleheader.

Mississippi College starting pitcher Brooks Fortenberry shut down LC's bats, as he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning until Mark Riendeau was able to break it up with a single into right field.

Fortenberry would pick up the win to move to 4-2 on the year, working seven innings, giving up one hit, and striking out 10.

LC would finish the game with only three hits and struck out 14 times.

Madison Lachney (4-1) took his first loss of the season despite going seven strong innings, as only one of his six runs given up on the night was earned.

The two team will square off in the rubber match of the series tomorrow at noon with a single nine inning. Josh Lang (2-3, 2.23 ERA) is expected to start on the mound for the Wildcats, who are now 12-11 overall, 3-2 in ASC play.
