The Louisiana College Lady Wildcats, the preseason favorites to win the American Southwest Conference title, kicked off their 2013-2014 season with a 72-67 home win over previously unbeaten Millsaps on Monday night in the H.O. West Fieldhouse.

With the loss of All-Region performers
Natosha Gottlieb and
Shaina Howard to graduation, head coach Jason Tinsley entered a large number of freshmen into his fast-paced, high-scoring rotation.

The results did not disappoint.

Freshman forward Nastosha Morvant got the start and recorded a double-double in her first career game with the Lady Cats, scoring 12 points on 6-15 shooting to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Fellow freshman
Karli West joined Morvant in double figures with 12 points, which included a game-high four three pointers.

Junior guard
Karylon Thornton, a returner starter from a season ago, was the other Lady Wildcat in double figures as she put in a team-high 14 points and dished out seven assists.

Millsaps' Velvet Johnson led all scorers on the night with 21 points.

Much line with the Tinsley coached teams of the past three seasons, LC was able to force an incredible 26 turnovers and grab 22 offensive rebounds. This led to the Lady Wildcats outscoring Millsaps 32-15 in points off turnovers and 22-13 in second chance points.

LC (1-0) will not play at home again until November 30
th in their ASC opener against Concordia. They will hit the road next Tuesday for an in-state matchup against Loyola.Â
