Baseball rebounds from tough loss to split with LSUA

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College baseball team showed some resilience Monday night in a doubleheader showdown with local rival LSU-Alexandria. After dropping a 12-5 decision to the Generals in the first game, the Wildcats maintained total control in a 12-7 win.

In the late game, LC (13-17) scored their runs on 13 hits while committing one error. LSUA (12-23) scored its runs on 11 hits and committed three errors.

Game 2 was close, 4-1, until a seven-run fourth inning blew the game open for the Wildcats and, with the exception of a six-run sixth, LC was able to close the door on the victory.

Sophomore Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS) pitching in relief of freshman Brandon Lacoy (Tioga, La./Tioga HS), got the win and improved to 1-1 on the year after working  1 1/3 innings and striking out three and walking no one and allowing no runs. Lacoy, who made his first college start, pitched the first 3 2/3 innings and struck out four and walked two while allowing a single earned run.

James Ott (0-1) took the loss after pitching 2 2/3 innings and striking out two while walking two and allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Senior shortstop Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard) and freshman third baseman Cary Myers (Zachary, La./Zachary HS) were the stars for the LC offense in the late game, both going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Marks added two doubles and three RBI and Myers one double and two RBI in the game.

Senior leftfielder Steven Bowman (Hammond, La./Hammond HS) went 1-for-3 with two RBI in the game while freshman leadoff Darien Bartie (Lake Charles, La./St. Louis Catholic) went 1-for-3 and scored three runs for LC.

LSUA was paced by third baseman Hunter Decell, who went 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

In the first game, the Wildcats were hurt by four errors which led to six unearned runs in a 12-5 loss. LSU-A scored at least one run in each of the game's seven innings amassing its runs on 12 hits.

LC was held scoreless through the first three innings and trailed 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth before junior outfielder  Cole Bagbey (Monroe, La./Sterlington HS) cut the lead in half with a three-RBI double in the bottom of the inning, part of a four-run rally.

LSUA, however, outscored the Wildcats 6-1 the remainder of the game to secure the win.

Zachary Christ (1-2), pitching 3 2/3 innings of relief of Troy Laborde, got the victory after striking out four and walking one while allowing five hits and an earned run.

Chris Bridges (Maurice, La./North Vermillion HS) fell to 0-2 on the year after pitching the game's first two innings and allowing a pair of earned runs.

Bagbey and sophomore first baseman Matt Scott (Pineville, La./Pineville HS) were LC's top batters in the second game. Bagbey went 1-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored with Scott went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

First baseman Cullen Vujnovich was LSUA's top batter with a 3-for-4 showing.  Right fielder Justin Crowell went 2-for-2 with two RBI while designated hitter Tid Hilger went 1-for-1 with two RBI and five runs scored after being walked his first four times to the plate.

LC returns to action this Friday at 6 p.m. with an American Southwest Conference game against Ozarks, the first of a three-game series between the Wildcats and Eagles.
