MARSHALL, Texas – The Louisiana College baseball team went into its weekend series with rival East Texas Baptist on a seven-game losing streak and needing wins against the Tigers to keep its American Southwest Conference tournament hoped alive.
The Wildcats (12-16, 6-6 ASC East) came out of the series winners of 2-of-3 and holding a critical tiebreaker over ETBU (10-20, 5-7 ASC East), the team LC is competing with for the fourth seed in the ASC East, the last entrant into the conference tournament.
Louisiana College started the series with an 8-4 win and ended it with an 8-6 win. Sandwiched in between was a hard-fought 1-0 loss, a game in which LC was held to two hits and struck out seven times by ETBU's Chance Cotton.
In Game 1, senior right-hander
Justin Reed (Kinder, La./Kinder HS) picked up the win and improved to 3-3 on the year after working the first six innings and striking out two while walking three and allowing six hits and three earned runs.
In the series-deciding game, senior left-hander
Dustin Fulks (Simpson, La./Simpson HS) picked up the win and improved to 4-2 on the year pitching three innings of relief of starter
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS). Fulks struck out two and walked three while allowing four hits and three earned runs.
Senior
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard) picked up his fourth save of the season in the final contest after working the ninth inning and striking out one.
Marks, who starts at shortstop, was an offensive standout for the Wildcats. He went a combined 4-for-15 on the series with three RBI, three runs scored and two doubles.
Freshman third baseman
Cary Myers (Zachary, La./Zachary HS) went 6-for-13 with two runs scored and four RBI in the series while Prejean, normally the LC starting second baseman, went 2-for-7 with a run scored.
Freshman
Darien Bartie (Lake Charles, La./St. Louis Catholic) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI in the third contest.
LC returns to action at home Monday with a 4 p.m. non-conference showdown with LSU-Alexandria.
