AUSTIN, Texas - The Louisiana College Baseball team is one win away from its first trip to the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament second round. The Wildcats defeated defending conference champ Concordia 8-5 Friday night and need to will have two chances to finish the Tornadoes in the best-of-3 series on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
LC (15-22) scored seven runs in the third inning and never looked back as Concordia (31-9) scored two runs in both the third and fifth but could never close the gap.
Sophomore
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS), who pitched the last 4 2/3 innings in relief of senior starter
Justin Reed (Kinder, La./Kinder HS), got the win and improved to 3-2 after striking out six and walking two while allowing just one earned run. Reed, who got the no-decision, struck out three in his 4 1/3 innings.
Scott Hays (6-3) took the loss after lasting just 2 1/3 innings.
Offensively, LC got strong showings from sophomore
Matt Scott (Pineville, La./Pineville HS), freshman second baseman
Mark Riendeau (Carlsbad, Cal./Tri-City Christian), junior first baseman
Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS) and freshman third baseman
Cary Myers (Zachary, La./Zachary HS).
Riendeau went 1-for-4 but had the big hit of the night, a three-run homerun in the third.
Scott went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Doughty and Myers each went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Concordia left fielder Quinn Guest went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Tornadoes.
