Wildcats back in ASC Tournament

Box Score
TYLER, Texas – The Louisiana College baseball team lost its final regular season game, dropping a tough 11-6 decision to national power Texas-Tyler, but thanks to a Texas Dallas win over East Texas Baptist, the Wildcats still earned their 10th postseason berth in the past 12 years.

LC (14-22, 7-11 ASC East) will play in its third straight American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, this year entering as the fourth seed from the ASC East Division.

East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau also finished with 7-11 division marks but thanks to an LC sweep of LeTourneau in March and a series win over ETBU earlier this month, LC earned the berth via a tiebreaker.

This grants the Wildcats a rematch with defending conference champion and ASC West No. 1 Concordia in Austin, Texas, next week.

“We're excited to get the extra week of baseball,” Louisiana College coach Mike Byrnes said. “We didn't have a very good weekend in Tyler but we did play well enough early on in our conference schedule to get in to the tournament. We've given ourselves an opportunity to play for a championship. We're an 0-0 ballclub now and anything can happen. We're really looking forward to a great series with Concordia.”

Last year Concordia won the best-of-three series, 2-1.  On opening day of 2012, the Tornados defeated LC 4-2 in a hard-fought game.

The series will begin with a single game on Friday and conclude with a second and if-necessary-third game on Saturday.

Louisiana College will look to bounce back from a tough outing in Sunday's regular-season finale.

The Patriots (32-9, 14-4 ASC East) held a 6-0 lead by the end of the third inning and – despite a six runs by the Wildcats through the fourth-sixth innings, including a four-run fifth – never looked back.

Senior Dustin Fulks (Simpson, La./Simpson HS) took the loss and fell to 4-3 after pitching the first two innings and striking out one.

Texas-Tyler reliever Parker Sheets picked up his second win of the series after working an inning and a third in place of starter Chase Willard, who struck out three in 4 2/3 innings. Jacob Yanker got the save working the last three full innings and striking out two.

Offensively, LC senior shortstop Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard), sophomore designated hitter Matt Scott (Pineville, La./Pineville HS) and sophomore catcher Taylor Beavers (Georgetown, La./Tioga HS) were the leaders.

Marks went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Scott 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double and Beavers 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Patriots were led by Aaron McCain with a 4-for-6 showing at the plate to go along with three runs scored and two RBI.
