RICHARDSON, Texas – Let it not be said that the Louisiana College softball team can't respond when backed into a corner. Saturday, less than an hour after losing their third straight game to Texas Dallas and in danger of missing out on the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament for the second straight year, the Lady Cats unleashed a barrage of runs to defeat UTD 8-0 on the mercy rule and secure a place in the ASC Tournament.
LC (25-11,14-10 ASC East) fell by a score of 6-3 to the Comets (24-14, 12-12 ASC East) in the first half of a Saturday's regular-season-ending doubleheader and would have lost out on a tiebreaker among themselves, UTD and Mississippi College with a fourth consecutive loss.
Lucky for Lady Cat fans, no one in Pineville will have to ask, “What if?”
LC scored three runs in the first inning, three in the second and two in the fourth to put a fast end to the game and guarantee itself either second or third place in the ASC East depending on the outcome of a Monday doubleheader between East Texas Baptist or Texas Tyler.
Currently LC is in third but if the Lady Cats have an equal or better conference record than ETBU after Monday's action they would assume the No. 2 seed in the East.
Rosier made a curious decision heading into the final regular season game, starting freshman
Tori Davis (West Monroe, La./West Ouachita HS) at pitcher. But it was a decision that paid off.
Davis (6-0), who had made only seven previous appearances and four starts, responded with a shutout on seven hits, two walks and no strikeouts. The LC defense backed her superbly, turning a pair of double plays in the game.
Offensively, a collection of Lady Cats came through in the late game.
Freshman designated player
Laura Gulotta-Parrish (Plaquemine, La./St. Joseph Academy) went 2-for-2 with two-run homerun, two runs scored and three RBI.
Sophomore first baseman
Emily Douglas (Gonzles, La./St. Amant HS) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, sophomore outfielder
Chelsea Allen (Houma, La./Vandebilt Catholic) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and junior outfielder and leadoff
Meggie Burkett (West Monroe, La./West Ouachita HS) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Jeni Olbeter (3-5), who lasted just one inning, took the loss for Texas Dallas in Game 2.
In Game 1, Heather Foust (17-4) recorded her third straight victory over LC pitching six innings and striking out five. Micah Starkey (2) picked up the save.
Texas Dallas was led on offense by right fielder Avery McHugh who went a combined 6-for-6 on the day.
