TYLER, Texas – The Louisiana College baseball team suffered back-to-back losses to Texas-Tyler Saturday and left themselves needing a win, and potentially some help from and old rival, to earn a berth in the 2012 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament.
LC (14-22, 7-11 ASC East) fell to the Patriots (32-9, 14-4 ASC East) by scores of 5-3 and 14-5, losses that left the Wildcats in fourth place but with an identical division record to rival East Texas Baptist.
Louisiana College took 2-of-3 from ETBU in the teams' series earlier this season and holds the tiebreaker over the Tigers meaning that LC needs either a win or an ETBU loss to Texas Dallas on Sunday to receive the final bid into the ASC Tournament.
Wins were not forthcoming on Saturday.
The Wildcats led twice in the early game but surrendered a pair of sixth-inning runs. In the second game, the Patriots held an 11-1 advantage by the end of the fifth inning and never looked back.
Sophomore pitcher
Cole Prejean (2-2) took the loss in the first contest after working 5 1/3 innings and striking out four while senior
Justin Reed (3-5) took the loss in Game 2 after pitching 4 2/3 innings and striking out three.
UTT's Parker Sheets picked up the win in relief in the first game, striking out two in the sixth inning. Derek Miller got the save. In the second game, freshman Michael Blevins got the win after pitching seven innings and striking out one.
On offense, Louisiana College was led by sophomore
Matt Scott (Pineville, La./Pineville HS) and junior
Cole Bagbey.
Scott went a combined 3-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI while Bagbey went 3-for-6 with a run scored.
Texas-Tyler was paced by A. McCain who went a combined 6-for-9 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
The Wildcats and Patriots will wrap their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
